A simple guide to cellular energy

How to support
your mitochondria.

"Growing" mitochondria usually means mitochondrial biogenesis — the process through which cells can make more mitochondria. Start with the science, watch The Mitochondria Story, then explore.

What does "growing your mitochondria" mean?

It means supporting mitochondrial biogenesis — the process your cells use to create new mitochondria. The most effective levers are exercise (especially HIIT), cold exposure, time-restricted eating, quality sleep, and targeted nutrients like PQQ, CoQ10, and creatine.

Start with a clean answer

What does it mean to "grow" your mitochondria?

Mitochondrial biogenesis is the process through which building more mitochondrial components and expand their mitochondrial network. The everyday language, "growing" mitochondria does not mean a supplement will create new mitochondria or treat a medical condition.

What mitochondria do

Mitochondria help convert oxygen and fuel molecules from food into energy the cell can use. Different tissues hold different mitochondrial networks depending on their energy demands.

What the evidence supports

Exercise is one of the best-studied ways to stimulate mitochondrial gains in skeletal muscle. A 2022 systematic review found increases in markers of mitochondrial biogenesis after a single bout of exercise. Mito research guide →

Where supplements come in

Supplements should be judged by their label, ingredients, dose, quality of evidence, and your individual health situation. They are not a replacement for medical care, nutrition, sleep, or physical activity. Supplement checklist →

Evidence, safety, and getting guidance

Responses to exercise and supplements vary. Anyone who is pregnant, managing a medical condition, taking medication, or experiencing ongoing health concerns should talk with a qualified health professional.

Questions about mitochondria

What does "growing mitochondria" mean?

Mitochondrial biogenesis: a collection of cellular processes that build mitochondria and can increase mitochondrial content and capacity.

Can adults make more mitochondria?

Yes — adult tissues can adapt their mitochondrial networks, especially skeletal muscle, in response to exercise.

Does this site claim MoreMito creates new mitochondria?

No. This educational page does not claim that MoreMito creates new mitochondria or treats a medical condition.

How should I evaluate a mitochondrial supplement?

Check the label, ingredients, dose, evidence, and third-party testing — then talk with a qualified health professional.

Is mitochondrial-health information the same as medical advice?

No — see a qualified health professional with questions related to your care.
